And the Anonymous Nobody – De La Soul

This week De La Soul is gearing up to release their ninth studio album titled, And the Anonymous Nobody. The legends of Hip Hop have been taking unorthodox approaches to their music recently – releasing their entire catalog for free – and this album is no different. For starters, they crowdfunded presumably the entire thing. They listed their goal as $110,000. That amount was surpassed in just 10 hours, and in total, the band had raised over $600,000. They’ve also spent 3 years on it and that’s because they aren’t using just the traditional hip-hip sampling. They’ve been working tirelessly with the Rhythm Roots Allstars and a slew of other guest artists which include David Byrne, Usher, Little Dragon, and more. The group has kindly released 2 singles in preperation for the album, “Trainwreck” and Greyhounds feat. Usher.

How To Be A Human Being – Glass Animals

How to be a Human Being is the sophomore release from English indie-rock group Glass Animals. The band’s first album Zaba captivated listeners with their smooth, psychedelic melodies and vocals, earning them spots on the lineups of some of the world’s biggest music festivals, including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, and Coachella. How to be a Human Being is less “Gooey” than Zapa, and features more intense rhythm sections. As the band’s frontman Dave Bayley explains “Instead of sitting in the studio, we’ve been in a different city every night; making friends, hearing crazy stories, getting in crazy trouble. All of it made me want to think about people, and write something rawer and more human.” Listen to the singles “Life Itself” and “Youth” to hear a good snippet of what you’re in store for this Friday.

Mangy Love – Cass McCombs

Mangy Love is Cass McCombs debut album with his new record label Anti-. NPR’s Otis Hart calls it “the kind of steely self-confidence that provides fleeting inspiration to the rebel hiding inside all of us, before we go back to whatever pays our bills.” Mangy Love finds “McCombs at his most blunt: tackling sociopolitical issues through his uniquely cracked lens of lyrical wit and singular insight. McCombs uses himself as a mirror to misguided and confounding realities, confronting them head-on: “Rancid Girl” reads like a ZZ Top study in Kardashian politics, “Run Sister Run” a mantra for a misogynistic justice system, “Bum Bum Bum” displays a racist, elitist government through the allegory of sadistic dog breeding; the album is sewn together by a common thread of ‘opposition,’ most directly articulated in “Opposite House”, with allusions to mental illness. ‘Laughter Is The Best Medicine’ provides a possible recipe for healing, with the help of an authentic medicine man, the legendary Rev. Goat Carson.” (Anti-) Pre-order your copy below and stream the entire album HERE curtosy of NPR First Listen.

Between Waves – The Album Leaf

The following nNearly twenty years into a career that has seen Jimmy LaValle exercising his creativity across the realms of film scoring, sound collage, and electronic / rock music, via instrumental and vocal-driven compositions alike, LaValle and THE ALBUM LEAF are poised to deliver yet another sonic triumph with 2016’s Between Waves. Born out of a thorough reinvention of LaValle’s creative process and approach, Between Waves is THE ALBUM LEAF’s first proper full-length record in over six years and the first to be recorded and produced as a complete band. The album displays multifaceted, meticulous sound design, a keen ear for balancing disparate influences, and the strongest senses of dynamics, rhythm, and composition THE ALBUM LEAF has displayed to date. From the moody evolution of “Glimmering Lights” to the wistful trip-hop stylings of “New Soul” and beyond, Between Waves is a gorgeous collection of euphoric melodies and emotionally charged, multi-instrumental driven soundscapes from the longstanding innovators. This is intelligent, beautifully composed music at its most inventive, most confident, and most impressive. Stream the full album via NPR’s First Listen and pre-order your copy below.
