David Bowie Is…, the exhibition that saw more than 300,000 visitors at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, opens today at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art and is the exhibit’s only North American stop. David Bowie Is… features more than 400 pieces of memorabilia from The Thin White Duke’s personal collection of more than 50 years. This retrospective captures the icon’s life from his early on interest in becoming a jazz musician, his transformation from David Robert Jones to David Bowie and subsequent alternate personas – quite literally the rise (though, nary a fall) of Ziggy Stardust.

The exhibit is of the same caliber as any featured exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum. The added touch of having most of the elements – photography, artwork, costumes and performance pieces from song, stage, and film – come from Bowie’s personal collection make it all the more intimate. David Bowie Is… runs through January 4, 2015 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Click here for tickets.
